The Collaboration Project
The motivation for The Collaboration Project stems from working with selected students, over the last couple of years, to create works that combined different styles of painting. Typically, collaborative artworks consist of one artist working on a piece, and then passing it on to another artist. My approach has been for both artists to work simultaneously to complete a painting that is experimental, spontaneous and based on a collaborative effort. Not all artists can work together in this format due to the fact that there can be no attachment to the work. I wanted the experience to be like musicians improvising in a “jam” session. The artists must be able to work, in chorus and not be afraid to re-work each other’s mark making, for the betterment of the overall composition. The Collaboration Project took this concept to the next level by working individually with eight artists over the period of four months to create collaborative paintings.
